Coral Davies asked Andy Weir:

While I personally was very pleased when all the private and governmental corporations decided to club together to save Mark Watney, were you ever tempted to embrace the more harsher (and honestly, more believable) line that people on Earth simply said 'sorry, thats too expensive, he signed a waver expunging us of responsibility should he have a fatal accident, we can't save him'?

Andy Weir The topic comes up here and there throughout the book, but no I never considered any scenario where they give up on him. The central theme of the book is how people work together against nature, and that it's part of being human to do so.
