Andy Weir Using first-person from Mark let me tell the reader all about the science and tech without being boring. There's an enormous amount of exposition in the book and I had to make it interesting. So a wise-cracking narration with jokes was called for.

The "god" segments were in places where I wanted to reader to feel like they were experiencing the events at the same time as Mark. As opposed to the log entries which are all Mark talking about things that already happened.
