My twelve year old son is a huge fan of your book and listens to the audio version over and over again at bedtime. Were you surprised at how wide an appeal The Martian had, and the age range of your fans?

Andy Weir Yes, it was quite a surprise. When I wrote it I assumed the only readers would be highly technical space dorks like me. But for reasons I don't understand it seems to have a broad appeal.

I loved the book. Really. My question is were you worried that the book would be a bit "too much" in terms of technical detail and such for the average person? I like that it isn't just log entries and there's a narrative because it breaks things up somewhat, but was the narrative added later to break things up? Or was it always part of the plan to have more characters and another POV?
