Jeremy asked Andy Weir:

First, while writing this or editing it, did you ever consider chopping out viewpoints that are external to "the Martian"? I often felt that the exposition on what was actually going on to get this guy rescued undercut the sense of isolation and the long odds of rescue.

Andy Weir That was a major decision I had to make. Originally I had it in mind for the whole book to be just his log entries. I was nervous about adding chapters that took place at NASA. But I ultimately decided there was just too much interesting stuff going on at NASA and aboard Hermes to ignore it.
