In Alex's language there are many pronouns but Alex uses the genderless pronouns that sworn soldiers in the army use. When Alex left the soldiering life, they chose to continue to use these pronouns. Alex is never referred to as "they/them" but the genderless pronouns from their language.
(Note: I read an ARC at the time of answering this question and cannot say the the final publish product will lead to a different answer."
