Alex is referred to as 'ka/kan,' made up "sworn soldier" pronouns from kan fictional homeland.

Alex uses genderless pronoun that soldiers sworn into the army of that country use. Alex's country also refers to anyone pre-puberty (children) as va/van which is used a lot in the last several chapters of the story.

It's a twist on the "they/them" pronouns to align with Alex's culture in the book. In Alex's language there are many pronouns but Alex uses the genderless pronouns that sworn soldiers in the army use. When Alex left the soldiering life, they chose to continue to use these pronouns. Alex is never referred to as "they/them" but the genderless pronouns from their language.
