I'm not sure there's any one thing, and honestly, one man's trash is another man's treasure! That said, one of my pain points is inconsistency of emotion, where a character is ecstatic one moment and furious the next, for no other reason than to complete an action the author wants. Characters really DO have to exist as free-feeling entities and can't be forced into illogical behavior.
