Joseph Delaney Some spooks drift towards the dark. A good example of that is Morgan, one of Gregory’s apprentices who is the enemy in ‘The Spook’s Secret (Book Three). They use the dark to fight the light!

Yes!

I think your main point is valid. Tom Ward compromises using the magical help of a witch (Alice) to fight the dark. Yes, I think some spooks would sacrifice themselves in that way to save others.
