Michael B Tager
Michael B Tager asked L.E. Modesitt Jr.:

I recently attended (separate) readings by Andre Dubus (House of Sand and Fog) and Abigail Thomas (Safekeeping). Both mentioned that they do not write poetry, but read some every night. When asked, they said that it informs their writing and that they do it to refill their creative well. Thoughts?

L.E. Modesitt Jr. I wrote poetry for fifteen years before I even thought about writing prose fiction... and still do write poetry, some of which sometimes shows up in my fiction. I often still read and re-read poetry and personally believe all writers should be schooled in poetry, particularly "hard" verse forms.
