I think your "Last Policeman" books have a nice sense of place (even though I've never lived in New Hampshire.) I live in Chicago and many of the books I've read that are set there have a horrible sense of place (although "The Time Traveler's Wife" is a notable exception.) Do you do location research when setting a novel? How important to you is "getting facts right" when writing a novel?
Ben H. Winters
Yes, I do a ton of research of all kinds, and it is super important to me to get the feel of the place right. When I wrote TLP I was living in Cambridge, MA, and I must have taken a dozen trips back and forth to Concord and just sort of wandered around, poking into stores and getting a sense of the city map. At some point I gave myself a tour of the hospital, which led to that really being a big location for the book. Getting the facts right is crucially important, I think, especially for books likef mine, where there is this HUGE and UNLIKELY conceit -- I want everything else to feel incredibly real, as grounded and natural as possible.

By coincidence, the hold system at my local library served up "Underground Airline" almost exactly a month after Ta-Nehisi Coates' "Between the World and Me." I wish I could force every kid in America to read both of these books, in that exact order, with exactly the same spacing. Both books discuss the owning of one's body. How did you lock into this concept with such clarity? Have you ever spoken with Coates?

What do you do about readers like me who don't "review," but muse, and spend a few days gathering their thoughts? As for me, as a muser, I do hope you go back. I loved 'Underground Airlines," for all sorts of reasons I "edited" in later. I just hope you know people, me, that we edit. Best wishes and thank you.

Hey Ben! I LOVED The Last Policaman series. I devoured all three books in under a week. Was there ever any thought on a different ending? Maybe the video was right and the asteroid moved at the last minute? At first I thought it was headed for him brining the Amish family back to live underground. Or did you have this ending in mine the entire time?
