I find the use of long dashes instead of quotation marks very distracting. It takes me out of the story. Does anyone know why this punctuation choice was made?

I haven't finished the book yet, but the author does give the reader a special feeling about "Dennis" simply by seeing his name in quotes all the time. That impact is stark because he never uses quotation marks around the dialogue. (less)
