I've long coopted life experiences in my stories, as I think all writers do. I've also taken bits and pieces from interesting people I've known and woven them into characters.
As far as a complete plot for a mystery, I don't think I've had that. Good writing is all about embellishment and imagination. And for inspiration, what's happening in the real world today is all the intrigue I can handle.

Yesterday I was having a beer with my good friend and Southwest pilot Drew Gano, and I said, "Dude, I've discovered a brilliant new author! I've read his whole Assassin's series. His name is Ward Larsen." And he about spills his beer and says, "Yeah, I flew with him a couple of months ago!" I think it's cool that you're still flying with Southwest.
