When I was 9, my mother had a baby boy, but he was born with hydrocephalus and in those days doctors encouraged parents to have children with those kinds of problems hospitalized or institutionalized. He wasn't expected to live long. He lived 3 years but was always in a care facilty and I never saw him. I regret that but it might make for a good "What if?" novel.
