I don’t get the prologue. Can anyone help? I know it’s Joy’s bike, but who is the stranger and how does it fit in the storyline?

If they would have found the bike, they would have assumed that something bad happened to Joy while she was out riding and not that Stan had anything to do with it. That guy stealing her bike removed the evidence and him dying made sure the real story would never be told(less)
