Call it an anti-hero story? Wu Zetian, the woman the character is based on, also did a lot of questionable things to come into power, (the author made a video series on the Empress on her youtube if you are interested) yet she is celebrated in Chinese history as one of the strongest rulers. And tbf, both Yizhi and Zetian's dads were absolute monsters to their children and were willing to let them die

It could go either way in the next book, after that cliffhanger... But I absolutely agree, the last few chapters prevented me from rooting for them for good.
