The first chapter after the prologue says "England, late 2010s", not 2010. So you might assume the book is set in 2016. But I think it is interesting Shafak is not specific - I'm not sure if she is referring to an actual storm that year: part of the real but not-real feeling of this book.

The writer does not give specific dates. Kostas returns to Cyprus in early 2000s and the later parts are set in late 2020s. It is never stated that she was born in 2000!

Shafak states it is "late 2010s". I think this is part because, as the story progresses, the setting of that time stays the same, Rather than it saying early June, late August, etc. etc. it's presumed that the parts of story continue fairly chronologically, but we aren't paying too close attention to years that aren't written in history books (ink.. and winners); so we know dates of the war, but not necessarily the personal stuff.
