Gothwin asked Mark Lawrence:

Hey Mark. We had a little exchange on Twitter when I polled to see which of your books I should read (having read and enjoyed your sci-fi trilogy). I know you said that your fantasy is 'tinged' with sci-fi, but I'm just curious why you (as a scientist) don't write more sci-fi? Is it because you need escapism from the science or something else? Not a dig, but a genuinely curious.

Mark Lawrence I guess scifi has just never excited me as much. The scifi I read as a kid was pretty dry stuff where the ideas dominated and the characters were fairly blah. They had very little emotion in them.

Lord of the Rings on the other hand was high drama, triumph, loss. I wanted a sword in my hand, not a ray gun. And I write what I want to read.
