It certainly has similarities. Powerful man, creepy housekeeper, drowning/boat, mousey (supposedly) heroine. I think you could make the argument that it was inspired by Rebecca.

Yes! I felt it the whole way through, but especially when she comes down in the dress. That scene is right out of "Rebecca".
