Actually, at 13 yo sex is already on the table. Not doing it, maybe, probably, hopefully, but it is already a topic. And, in this particular book (and I've read tons of rom-coms), sex is treated exactly as it should be: akward and painfull and full of doubts. The fact that he repetedly asks for consent is a good message for teenagers. So, yeah, I think that a 13yo could and maybe even should read it :)

I would. They are going to do it either way. Take it from someone who read smut at 13. They just get better at hiding it. 🤷🏻♀️
Mirela
No. There are other books more appropiate or, you could blank out chapter 16 and then hand it over to that 13 years old.
Shannon
I wouldn’t let my 13 year old read it.
Larissa
So I read it as a thirteen year old and honestly it wasn't that bad. If the 13-year-old in question is mature then yeah but there is a very explicit sex scene so as long as they're okay with that then yeah.
Sofia
I mean, I'm thirteen and I read it just fine. It really depends on the maturity of the person reading this. Like, I took it really well, but my close friends are not mature enough for it.
Plus, there are a lot of lessons here about consent and respect in the workplace.
Also, it's just a really fun read!

Depends on the 13 year old. If s/he is mature for their age and you are OK with the one very explicit sex scene.
I actually had a conversation about the book with my 16 year old daughter. She didn’t read the book herself but we often discuss what each of us is reading/watching.
Unlike, Little Feather, I think the situations presented in the book including the sexual harassment, smart career-oriented women and how they are treated in the workplace, dating in the workplace and the ethics involved, same sex relationships, casual sex vs waiting for a caring relationship, social awkwardness and self doubt and how to handle it, etc make great conversation starters with your teenagers along the lines of “what do you think of her/his choice…what would you do instead?”

I would personally not recommend this book for a 13 year old. It is labelled an adult romance and it does feature an explicit sex scene. I would recommend this one for 16/17+.
Tab
No. If they put an age warning, respect it.
naaz
I feel like it depends on the maturity of the 13-year-old in question. It is targeted towards an older audience (16/17+) and it does feature an explicit sex scene. But in my opinion, yeah a mature enough 13-year-old could read this (just make sure they know what they're getting into).
Olivia VH
I mean I'm 14 and I read it 🤷♀️
Deja Veršić
I'm 13 and I read it. It honestly wasn't that bad, and I loved the book.
Wren (Fariywren) Hiatus❥
I would say no. It's rated as New Adult so its for 18 to 25yo, but I think its ok for... like, 15 and up? I'm 15 and really liked it but it is pretty smuty.
Eden
There is one very explicit sex scene, as many people have already said. It depends on the discretion of the teenager in question and, ideally, their parents.
Additionally, I don't see why a thirteen-year-old would want to read this book about a doctoral student when there already is a wealth of well-written romance in YA literature. The subject matter of this book is more geared toward adults—the male lead is in his mid-thirties if I remember correctly. I don't think I would have related to the female lead in this book until I was at least seventeen or eighteen years old, if at that. I would personally steer a thirteen-year-old toward books with teenage main characters.

I read it and I’m thirteen but I did skip chapter 16. I just don’t like reading smit tho.
Allen Sanita
No, i don't think this is appropriate for 13 years old.
Maddie
Yes. Sex is already mentioned for teens in school or from their parents
Book lover
Absolutely not.
Amelia
I think so, In 12 and I read it so it would be ok.
Donna (Currently Absent)
Depends on the parent. I always read the book first before deciding if it was appropriate for my child when he was much younger. Once he entered middle school, the roles reversed and I read everything his English teachers assigned so I could help him with comprehending the material if he had questions.
Little Feather
I would never give this to a 13 year old...there's tons of swearing and sexual references, sexual harassment, plus sex, which is not only in one, but two chapters. Also while I enjoyed it as an adult, the main character didn't have the best self esteem, and she does make some poor choices, so I don't think she'd be a great role model for a 13 year old girl.
lawnchairbookworm
Could they yes, but should they no
Maalu
I would say its based on you maturity and how your reacting to those intimate scenes, better its good if your 18 or above
Zee
No. Absolutely not. That’s too young for this book
Amanda Avery
Well yeah just give them a bible and your all set!
I found it to be full of life lessons!!!!!

I was interested in the answers here! I would not give this to my 13 year old to read, but nor would she want to read it. She is starting to be interested in romance side stories but this would be too much too soon. Be 13 while you are 13... and enjoy this guilty pleasure when you are a little older. IMHO
BookNerd
honestly i would never recommend this to a 13 yo because of a few inappropriate scenes that last like two-three chapters but thats my opinion of course. but the rest of the book is awesome.
H
I was stupid and didn't read the age rating on this! i read this when I was 13 I skipped over it a chapter 16 and 17 but after a while I was wondering if it was that bad so I read the whole thing and tbh I cringed. I would not recommend this but It depends on the persons maturity level.
