William asked Ann Leckie:

I am reading Ancillary Justice a second time now, only 4 months after having first read it, something I have never done before since I started reading with Heinlein's Red Planet in the 1960s. AJ is Marvellous and even better on second reading. Thank you for sharing your gift with us, Ms Leckie. My question: When you first conceived AJ, did you envision a trilogy? When did you realise it would be?

Ann Leckie I knew pretty much immediately that it would be a trilogy--I'm not sure why, probably because there are so many trilogies in SF & F. But I also had no idea if I'd ever actually be able to write it as a trilogy, so I wrote the first book to stand alone as much as possible.
