Top Retellings of Classic Tales

I am struggling to get thorough this book. I'm 1/3 of the way through. I am a fast reader. I realize this book is sci fi, but it reads like a text book with bits of dialogue thrown in now and then. I love the main character. So, those who have read it: should I continue? Is it going to get better? Right now, I don't want to continue. I LOVED The Martian.
