do you need to read the first two for this to be understandable? I love a good trapped on an island mystery but the first two don't sound that interesting to me

John No, the mysteries are stand-alone. But if you read the first two you get more insight into the mystery of ex-detective Daniel Hawthorne.
Sean mystery is stand alone but I think you'd enjoy it more knowing the characters
Betty Give the first one a try. I think you'll find that it's worth the effort.
Annemarie Pedersen I say yes. Just finished book three and there are a lot of subtle moments that you appreciate so much more when you have been part of the character progression.
Diane I'm just starting the thrid one but the first two were very enjoyable, if that helps.
If you just have tons of books to read you could skip them and lose some depth.
Paul Clarke yes...you need to read the other two....but they are good so not a chore.
Trishia The first two are actually MUCH better:)
Helena I agree with John. The first two books introduce us to the 2 main characters and their relationship.
