Acarefulreader Before the fair, he is already thinking about asking Lucie to go to India with him, presumably as his wife - since is next thought is that she opposes marriage under the Married Women's Property Act. I also interpreted his plan (launched before the fair) to publish her data in the Guardian as part of what he saw as the solution to his conundrum -because he could then ask her to go with him to avoid any fallout. As it stood, they went to Italy instead. He also mentions resenting having to spend even a night away from her. I think he would answer you by saying, 'No silly, in the end, I would have found a way out of leaving her."
