If you're deciding whether to give it as a gift, I wouldn't take the chance. If you're deciding whether to let the kid try it--and s/he wants to--why the heck not? If they don't like it, they can give it back to you or the library or wherever.

Appropriate as far as language and content? Yes. But there are a lot of scientific descriptions that would probably be confusing for a 10-year old. It is well explained but I would say without taking some high school level chemistry and physics, the reader would be pretty lost. I would pass on this one until they are older!
