Thanks for the question, Marilyn! I generally don't base characters on friends or family, but I have borrowed their names before, creating characters in their honor. My cousin and nephews appear as minor characters in my California Legends series. I gave the hero of The Stowaway the name of a friend. And I put a pair of my devoted readers' names into Passion's Exile.
