I loved both Chocolat the book and the movie, but there were some very Hollywood changes made to the movie. How did you feel about the changes to the story and characters in the movie? In retrospect, would you incorporate some of these changes into your book, or leave as is?

The changes made to the movie had nothing to do with me, and everything to do with someone else's perception of the audience demographic. It didn't surprise me that changes were made (I saw all the versions of the screenplay, so I was able to watch the evolution of the script), but no, I wouldn't incorporate any of them into my book. Books and films are very different media, and I'm happy for people to enjoy my story in either, or both, as they prefer.

I am reading Gentlemen and Players. I am very confused about the characters. I am not always sure who is talking. Sometimes when I think its Straightly i suddenly feel its someone i am not sure of. How many narrators are there. I know Snyde as a child. Does he grow up , falsify his identity and teach at St Oswald'? What name does he use? I don' know which chapters are his . PLEASE let me know. I love this book .
