They are all pretty much the same story and recycled jokes. Still fun if you space them apart but they are definitely a money grab.

Not really, Evanovich goes into backstory so you understand. I’ve read them in order, but I don’t believe it’s necessary.

You do not need to read them in order but I found the earlier ones funnier. I recommend reading the first two, then any of the others. She does give back ground info about how she got into the business, how she met Lula and Ranger, etc. but the reading the actual story of grandma's misadventures at funeral homes was more fun than a sentence about the fact that grandma had behavioral issues at wakes and funerals.
