Goodreads asked Gail M. Baugniet:

What’s the best thing about being a writer?

Gail M. Baugniet For me, the best thing about being a writer is realizing the ability to make my own choices. One of those choices was to self-publish my novels when the eleven-letter word was most often spoken in a whisper behind a sheltering hand. The decision didn't come lightly.

Oh, I did my due diligence with the sacred query letters to agents, first; researched who to query, how to format the words, who specifically to address, what to include, what to leave out, and how to address the envelope; even included the SASE or postcard. Received responses back from 90% of my mailings, very friendly rejections. A few "let me see more" responses before the ultimate rejection. As I aged, it became clear that the indie route was made for me.

The choices are now mine to make, right or wrong, at my own speed, in my own direction. For me, being a writer and making my own choices is the best possible career. I don't even have to ask someone else if I can take a coffee break!
