Have just read Sharks in the Time of Saviours and loved it. I really like your writing style. Who was your favourite character to write?

Kawai Strong Washburn All of the characters were challenging and engaging in their own ways. I loved the saltiness of Kaui, the resilience of Malia, and the loyalty of Dean. As hard as it was sometimes, I also enjoyed finding ways to make the characters complex and subverting, particularly with Dean and Kaui.

Nonstop gorgeous writing page after page after page, from beginning to end. Dialogue was awesome, too. That said, I actually wanted a bit more shark. My question is: was it easier to write this book being away from Hawaii, to see and write Hawaii in a way that could have turned out differently living there? How did distance affect the storytelling?

Your novel was amazingly visceral AND visual. I could smell the Hawaiian air which is unlike any air anywhere else in the world! Have you been approached to write a screenplay for a movie? I can imagine a movie that is part real and part anime.
