Kawai Strong Washburn:
Nonstop gorgeous writing page after page after page, from beginning to end. Dialogue was awesome, too. That said, I actually wanted a bit more shark. My question is: was it easier to write this book being away from Hawaii, to see and write Hawaii in a way that could have turned out differently living there? How did distance affect the storytelling?

Thank you for the compliments! 'Needs more shark' is always a valid critique, in my opinion. I'm not so sure it was the place I was living that made it easier/harder as much as having had the privilege of living in a variety of places around the world for long enough periods of time that I could contrast those places against my life in Hawai'i.

When discussing "writer's block," you said: "Asking "why" repeatedly can get things unlocked; reading a few pages from some of favorite books can help my brain develop a linguistic rhythm; etc etc etc. My time to write is limited, so I never waste it. Waste is an indulgence I can't afford." Does this account for the urgency and energy of your novel? Cld this be the source of its intensely lived affect on readers?
