I've read the previous books, but didn't re-read in the lead up to this third installment-- can someone remind me of the backstory of "RIP Candace"? If I'm remembering correctly this was a first girlfriend that he drowned at the beach at Coney Island or something?

yes, you are correct -- a previous gf b/4 Beck who he did drown (stated somewhat vaguely in first book).
