I've read the previous books, but didn't re-read in the lead up to this third installment-- can someone remind me of the backstory of "RIP Candace"? If I'm remembering correctly this was a first girlfriend that he drowned at the beach at Coney Island or something?

In the book Candace was always dead (since the beginning of 1st one). I guess you're confused because the series did not kill her, and that's the first difference we have from season 2 from book 2.
In the book Joe moves to LA because an employee stole books from the bookstore he worked after getting his trust in order to do so. He goes after her because he wants to punish her in his way, and in the middle of it he meets Love and fall in love yada yada yada... (less)
