Hi Beatrix, I have two different reasons for this! The first is an in-world reason: Teddy was still a baby during Death Sets Sail, and it's hard to travel with babies! Jie Jie wanted to stay home to look after him.
And the second is an author reason: if they'd been there, I'd have had more characters than I could fit into the book! Ping was actually supposed to be on the boat in the first draft, but I realised that I didn't have room to write about her properly so I had to remove her. It's tough fitting so many characters into a 65,000 word story!
