Gretta asked Jennifer A. Nielsen:

Hello! I know I already asked a question and got it answered, but if you have time I'd LOVE to see an answer for this because your Ascendance books have just unbelievable plot twists. How do you lay out clues in a story that lead to a bigger realization later on without the clues being too obvious? (P.s. When I saw you had answered my previous question it made my day. I was so happy! :)

Jennifer A. Nielsen Hi Gretta -

When I lay out the clues, I create a chart - one line for every scene and in each column I track what all the characters know during that scene, including one column for what you, the reader, should know. That way, I try to control for not letting out too much information too early. It doesn't always work, but that's always the plan.
