In chpt 43, when Bridie makes the crossing from Dublin to Liverpool as a young girl, does her friend Ronan drown? Or does he survive to become the fighter Ruby Doyle? In an earlier chapter, Bridie asks the pharmacist if he knew Ruby Doyle, and he says he saw Ruby fight one time, which makes it seem like Ronan/Ruby lived to adulthood, but when Bridie finally remembers him, it appears that Ronan died as a boy. Thoughts?

I think Ronan may have been pulled out of the water that day or just made his way out but long after Gan had taken Bridie. Ronan ended up surviving on his own, becoming the boxer Ruby Doyle only to eventually die in the bar brawl. He wasn't completely ready to pass on yet and stumbled across Bridie, helped her with this and found his own way. As much as he would have loved to stay with Bridie he couldn't do that to her and assured her it was okay to try to lead a little more of a normal life than the nothing he could give her. (less)
