I'm wondering about what happened to the character of Paul? His character traits changed so drastically from his introduction. He was so kind and intuitive with Odile and others. I know the war changes people, but wasn't this a bit extreme? It seemed out of character to do what he did to Margaret. And there is no mention of him at all at the end of the book.

His discontent was seen as he was required to direct traffic and when he was forced to clean up slurs painted on Nazi posters. The book also made it clear in the beginning, his disgust with women who snuggled up to Nazi’s. I think as the war ended, seeing all that Margaret had, food, money, clothing, He just snapped. I think he anger was always visible, I agree with you that Paul was missing from the wrap up of the book but also Odile’s parents.
