Stephanie I think you see a gradual change in Paul as the war dragged on. His discontent was seen as he was required to direct traffic and when he was forced to clean up slurs painted on Nazi posters. The book also made it clear in the beginning, his disgust with women who snuggled up to Nazi’s. I think as the war ended, seeing all that Margaret had, food, money, clothing, He just snapped. I think he anger was always visible, I agree with you that Paul was missing from the wrap up of the book but also Odile’s parents.
