The Ear, The Eye and The Arm by Nancy Farmer. A wonderful dystopian fiction for younger readers with three siblings as the main characters. It got my 12 year old nephew back into reading! I reread it myself every few years.

Wrinkle in Time is great!
Also, I'd recommend another book by this author called Liar & Spy.

Yes, I definitely agree with A Wrinkle in Time and other Madeleine L' Engle books, as well as the His Dark Material series. Walk Two Moons, by Sharon Creech is very similar is plot and ambience and is one of my favorite novels. And, although I was not so fond of these and didn't bother to finish the series, The Series of Unfortunate Events might be a good choice for its darker, mysterious qualities. Oh! also, Terry Pratchett's Wee Free Men series (Wee Free Men, A Hat Full of Sky, Wintersmith, and I Shall Wear Midnight) are the perfect combination of sic-fi, mystery, and magic.

You might try the Wrinkle in Time books by Madeleine L'Engle - the first of which is mentioned throughout this book. It's an excellent series. Also, one of the things I used to recommend to parents and grandparents who were trying to encourage reading was to look into anthologies geared towards the YA audience. There are several great ones out there. Ellen Datlow and Terry Windling have a series of fantastic anthologies that start with, I believe, The Faery Reel. I like anthologies because it's sometimes easier to get kids reading a short story than a longer book, and anthologies can expose people to a wide variety of authors, helping them to find new authors to follow.

If she's old enough, I'd recommend "The Time Traveler's Wife." Otherwise, I'd recommend "The Phantom Tollbooth."
I really enjoyed this book, but unlike the other recommendations on here, I hated "A Wrinkle in Time" and wouldn't recommend it.

The Maximum Ride series by James Patterson is the only book series I could get any of my friends to read. Now my whole school is reading the series its that good.

I recommend any other book by Rebecca Stead. This is the best one, but all the other ones are great, too.

A Wrinkle in Time (mentioned throughout the book. One of my favourites)
The Harry Potter series
The Phantom Tolbooth (Lots of wordplay. You might need to explain them in order to make them humorous. Like 'a symphony of colour')
The Golden Compass (also known as Northern Lights)
Fangirl (My life now in one word)
The Hobbit
Diary of a Wimpy Kid. Or if you prefer the girl's version:
Dork Diaries

I'd also suggest "The Phantom Tollbooth" it's a great read for kids and is magical enough to capture all ages.
