is it just me, or does this sound VERY SIMILAR to All Creatures Great and Small... people instead of animals ? Even right down to his arrival, the older doctor, the strange people, even the names ?

Jeffrey I love both series, as well as the BBC television series of All Creatures. I'm currently listening to the Irish Country series on audiobook. It's very well done. Yet I can't help picturing Barry as Christopher Timothy from the tv series (who played James Herriot) and Dr. O'Reilly as Robert Hardy (who played Siegfried Farnon).

Betsy Murphy it is , its even on the book if you enjoy James Herriot you might like Patrick Taylor - only James Herriot was a vet . in England and Barry is a GP in training in Ireland ( northern ) .

jles Exactly! Almost uncomfortably so. But this one is fiction. I adored the All Creatures Great and Small series and this one has great reviews and I have enjoyed the first few chapters so I will continue and enjoy it for what it is.

Lucie HAND That was the first thing I thought of when I started this book. But this one is wordier...the James Herriot books had more meat in them per chapter. I am enjoying this book (up to ch. 12) but I am skimming it because there is some stuff I don't want to read about. Some of the readers asked if that was a problem...having it be soooo similar to James Herriot's books...yes...like the original idea has been "borrowed". I LOVE THE James Herriot books.

Diane Wiesenborn Yup, that's the first thought I had too and it's a very obvious parallel, but I agree with Beverly: why would that be a problem? Those were such good books and I've really enjoyed this first one a lot. I expect I'll continue with the series.
