Kate Benesch asked A.G. Howard:

What are some tips you have for writing a great book blurb?

A.G. Howard People have different definitions of book blurbs. There's the praise that one well-known author gives a newer or debut author for their book (which then goes on the back cover to help sell it). This is called a blurb. For that, I really don't have any tips.

But I think what you might be referring to is a synopsis or premise similar to those on the inner flap of a book cover that let the perspective reader/buyer know what the book is about. These are also called blurbs in some circles.

If you're referring to the latter, the best tip I can give is to read other book blurbs in the same genre as your book and try to insert your characters/ events/ motive/ conflict mentally into the paragraphs while you're reading. It will help you find a rhythm and get the feel for length and content. Then you have some direction once you sit down to write your own.
