Erin Coughlin
Erin Coughlin asked Elizabeth Hoyt:

Hi there! I was just wondering if you had any advice for aspiring writers regarding writing query letters. Any tips or suggestions so that it doesn't seem so daunting/stressful?

Elizabeth Hoyt 1. Follow the directions on the agent's website (or wherever you've gotten info on her.) Send snail mail if she asked for it. Don't attach anything if she didn't.
2. I favor professionalism over trying to catch attention with something unexpected. Tell her who you are and that you're a writer that's written a ___(genre, subgenre) manuscript of __ words. Give a very brief, catchy (that's the hard part) description of your manuscript.
3. Finish your manuscript before querying and tell the agent in the letter that's it's finished.
4. Short and to the point. Don't be weird. Agents deal with a LOT of weird inquiries, which is why you want to be professional.

Hope that helps, Erin and good luck! ;-)
