Elizabeth Hoyt Hmm. Well, as the author, I'm looking at the book from the reverse side from you. Picture the book as a piece of embroidery--on the front the embroidery is all pretty and neat. On the back the threads are crossed and knotted to make the front look nice.

Which is all to say that I usually know waaaay before I ever start typing who is going to be the hero/heroine of not only this book but the one after. So I'm glad that it seems organic to you that a hero becomes "captivating" because that means I'm doing my job. ;-)

Having said that, however, I have had a few surprises: Charming Mickey was originally going to be Book 6 of Maiden Lane but I couldn't wait that long--he was too interesting in Book 1. ;-)
