Goodreads asked James M. McCracken:

How do you deal with writer’s block?

James M. McCracken That is a good question. While writing, my characters sometimes take on a life of their own. I have in mind the direction of the story/conversation but sometimes they do or say something I never intended. I can usually bring them back around but sometimes I hit a "brick wall" and the story comes to a stop. So I have to back everyone up and take another run at it.

At other times, the story just doesn't come so I have to take a break and do something else. I find if I don't stress over not being able to write, then it goes away faster.
