It is certainly written on a level and in a style that could engage HS students. But it is a very long book, almost 400 pages with small print, so for HS students I would assign particular chapters, not the whole book. Each chapter can stand alone as an essay.

Yes, it's appropriate and interesting for high schoolers.
However, I think it might be appropriate to use it in pieces for discussion rather than as a whole. It reads as a series of essays, rather than a story and each section would be good for discussion separately.

This is more a series of essays connecting Robin Wall Kimmerer's life experiences with elements of her surroundings, married with indigenous anecdotes and lessons. This is more cultural literature and spirituality than science, though it marries all three well. I recommend this for a junior or senior in high school.

It is definitely more memoir than textbook. I think someone who likes plants, Native American culture, ecology, and history will really enjoy this. I could see myself liking this in high school, for instance! She does talk about motherhood, so those passages would likely resonate more with adults. Nonetheless, I think an engaged HS student could enjoy this :)

I realize this was asked a couple years ago. However, I just noticed there is a new YA edition of this book, with some illustrations and a bit shorter. I haven’t looked at it, but think this would be a great option for teens/YA on own or as a class reading

Should be REQUIRED reading for every high school student. The writing is gorgeous and nothing like a textbook, full of stories and passion. The message is absolutely essential.
