The illustrations are adequate but not essential because the text is so well written. I was able to search the net on key words and find a wealth of supporting illustrations, videos, and text.

Yes! There are quite a few and then some coloured photographs in the middle. Some of the illustrations are made from the ink of the mushroom itself, so that is interesting to see.
Also, the pages are beautiful and the font is quite pleasing and larger than average. I have a paperback though, I'd say go for it!

There are photographs. The illustrations are sweet but certainly you don't need them.

Yes, there are some illustrations but they are simply informative, there aren't any beautiful coffee table book type illustrations.
