Was the ending supposed to suggest that it was actually Holland who survived, or that Niles assumed Holland's complete identity the way Norman Bates assumed his mom's identity at the end of the original Psycho?

Seems like Niles was too empathic for his own good, to the point of going insane and becoming what he emulated. But I'm curious if this is the accepted view or not. (less)
