Unlike major book sellers who wait until the publishing date to release them, Amazon will ship them to people who preordered as soon as they receive them from the publisher.
I would also imagine that authors give advanced copies to friends, relatives and people they want to endorse their book.
Then you'll also have people that write a review on a movie or book just because they assume it will be good or in anticipation of the book...which is quite annoying (they do this on the imbd movie site all the time)(less)
