I'd say it matters on maturity. A more naïve 12-year-old might not understand the contents of it well enough. The most possibly inappropriate parts contain vaguely graphic (mostly metaphoric) make-out sessions, implied domestic and sexual abuse, alcoholism, and some swearing.
