Peter V. Brett Derek and Brayan were from the Brayan's Gold novella, which isn't required reading, but still canon. I realized some readers might be mildly confused seeing them threaded into the novels, but I don't think it was enough to adversely affect anyone's enjoyment. Everything readers need to understand the relationships is in the text of The Core.
