First off, I just enjoy non-human characters, so that's a big part of it.
Beyond that, including magical constructs is a good way to explore ethical issues. Things like how humanity treats other potentially sapient entities, for example. It's similar to the way you often see science fiction exploring robots, AI characters, etc.

Hey Andrew, this is probably the wrong place for this, but thanks for the entertaining books you've written. That's it! Except, please keep on writing. Maybe just a wee bit faster, because I'm 65 and not getting any younger. Don't have the correct sword for that. Any idea if such a sword is hidden in the Pacific Northwest?

In the books, it is frequently stated that the spire in the unclaimed lands IS NOT the spire in the spider spire, and the spider spire's location is not known to anyone (except maybe to the whispers). It is my personal belief that Wydd pulled a trick similar to what Professor Orden did in the first book, and that the spider spire doesn't technically exist on any map, but it is stored outside/inside of physical space?
